Little Victories - First Time Holding Asher

Asher James Mills with Daddy, CJ Mills

Showing affection isn’t exactly my strongest quality. So you can imagine how it would be for me to show any kind of affection in a level 3 NNICU with Doctors and Nurses walking around and my baby boy looking like Radio Shack with 100 different wires coming out of him - it actually freaks me out a bit. But today, when Andrea and I walked over to his corner of the NNICU (yeah, he’s that important — he gets his own corner) and he opened his big eyes to look at his mommy and daddy, I mustered up (I’ve always wanted to use that phrase) enough courage to pinch hit for mommy, who has been holding him for the past few days.

The nurse helped move him out of his bed and into my arms and made sure all the wires and tubs were still connected. As I started to get comfortable, I noticed he was struggling to keep awake. Just before he completely fell asleep, he forced his eyes open one last time as if to ask, “what took you so long, Daddy?”

Just found your blog via Greg.

Our daughter was born at 32 weeks and was in the NICU for 2.5 weeks before she could come home. I know the feeling of changing a diaper and taking wires into account. But he’s looking super-strong and has a great head of hair. Praise God!
