Soccer Fans Are Nuts

NO other sport (baseball, basketball, football, etc.) can touch that of Soccer when it comes to passionate fans. Soccer fans do some crazy stuff. I’m sure you’ve all heard the stories of fans attacking and killing players after making mistakes or throwing things on the field - soccer fans are nuts.

I’ve been watching Euro 2008 this week and have loved every minute of it (the few minutes I have in between work, sleep and hospital visits). My wife hates it when I watch soccer because the only thing she can hear is the roar of the crowd. While I’ve never experienced that playing club, travel or high school soccer, I do know what it is like to be a passionate fan and coach. I coached a team of high school players for a several years during college. My team, Huntington United, won 5 championships during my tenure as head coach.  I had an absolute blast hanging out with those young men and enjoyed watching them go on to bigger and better things.  Some are even playing Division II and III soccer!

During those years of coaching, I often wondered why it was so easy to be passionate about coaching a game when I found it difficult to do the same in other aspects of my life that were really more important. Primarily those that involved my family.  I find myself doing the same with work - spending so much energy in the office and leaving nothing for my family at home.  Lucky for me, I have a pretty understanding wife that understands my crazy passion and helps me see when I’m being in idiot (plus, my little girl is old enough to allow me to coach her on occasion). Being passionate about certain things if life isn’t bad, I’m just slowly learning that I need to change my game plan and spend that passion and energy in some other arenas as well….

I’ve been NBA, NFL, MLB, as well as football, basketball, and baseball at all levels and none of that compares to a soccer game outside of the US. In 2001 I went to a soccer game in Honduras of the local pro team and it was the craziest sporting event ever. Screaming, fireworks in the stands, guards with machine guns and barbwire fence around the playing field. It was a blast, and I do not like soccer. Bro, you and I could go a long way to putting into practice “Choosing to Cheat”. I’ve been reading it and having a hard time dealing with the book. I wish I could help you but I’m a guilty memeber of that club.

Pat Rowland » I’ll have to check that book out. I’m not a reader, but it seems like something I should look into.

That soccer game you went to was my Senior Year of high school, right? I don’t think I went on that mission trip.

    Pat,
I remember that soccer game…it WAS intense! I’d never been to anything like it in my life! No, CJ, you weren’t on that trip with us but your good pal Andy was. My favorite memory of Andy on that trip was when he kept trying to get out of eating the “authentic” food and told our host “uno mas!”…thinking he was kindly refusing seconds and actually telling her “one more!” =]
