I Finally Have It - Unlocked iPhone

I remember the day it came out.  Apple and a cell phone combined?!  How great would that be? At the time, I had my Treo and realized that it did everything that the iPhone did.  Well, as time went on, third party applications starting coming and soon the iPhone did a LOT more than my Treo.  After some research, I realized that I would be able to unlock the iPhone and use it with my current cellular provider plan.  Fortunately, I knew someone that just upgraded to the 3G phone and bought their old one.

I’ve only had it for a few days, but I’ve got it loaded with applications - including a Nintendo emulator with over 950 games!  Jadyn already knows how to use the YouTube feature — which has come in handy a few times already while at a restaurant or store…I just ask if she wants to watch a movie, jump on the YouTube app and search for Disney - BINGO.

I’m sure there are other applications worthy of looking into, so please, all you iPhone users, what applications must I have?

First thing I’d do is go through all the Summerboard themes and find out which ones you like. I had about 10 different themes that I loved.

Then I’d just try stuff out. I had found some cool audio tools for my sound work.

Also there are some cool photo apps and of course video apps. Most of the video apps were limited unless you bought them for like $10. But that alone would put you above the rest of us.

Once they truly have version 2 unlocked, I will be looking forward to breaking mine again.

    Apple’s remote for your iTunes
Simplify media (won’t find it the apps store, gotta search online. I’m claytonbell if you get it)
YouVersion (called Bible in the app store)
    More Cowbell (just because)
Twinkle (I like it the best)
    Wordpress
    Pandora
Zenbe (to do list that syncs online)

    Enjoy!

@brent(inWorship) » What are your favorite themes? I’m having a hard time picking any besides the wood theme above…

    @Adam » sucker….

@CK » I’d be a blackberry guy if their data plans weren’t crazily overpriced with my provider. The new OS for the iPhone allows for Microsoft Exchange, so I can get the same push email for work as I would have with Blackberry - that sealed the deal for me, but I understand your position. And you can come corrupt Asher anytime you want - he’d probably appreciate a break from the corruption he is getting from his sister on a regular basis.

@CBell » Thanks for the app suggestions bro - the cowbell app sounds interesting…

Sweeeet. You had me at Monkey Ball. Don’t listen to those crackberry junkies. IQ loss is a proven side effect of crackberry use.

    Be strong.

    Themes…

I am trying to remember them, cause it’s been a while since I’ve had them loaded.

I had 3 I really liked. One was “leaf” or something like that. The other two are alluding me. I’ll try to find them. If you want to get techie, there are ways to load in and assign your own widgets for programs. I cannot remember what the program was called, but it is only available through the broken phone. Then you can totally customize your whole look.

Also. I echo Clayton with these…

    YouVersion
    More Cowbell
    Wordpress
Pandora (only bummer is it is in mono, unless your connected wifi)
I however love Twitterific, so we would differ there.

    I also love…
    Google app
    Sol Free(great solitaire game)
Beat Maker is amazing but $20
You’d love Picoli. Great photo editor and only $5
    Evernote
    Flashlight (seriously comes in handy!)
    Shazam
    Bubblewrap (haha)
Also, go find in the app store Jared. Hilarious!

Uhhh…I am taking credit for Jadyn knowing YouTube given my last trip up there that was the only way I could get her to sit down and relax with me.

I am glad you got the “i” (that’s short for iPhone - now that you are in the club I can give you its secret name) so that you find all the mad-cool apps and just send them along my way. So much work taken off my plate now.

CJ, the wordpress app would be good to have, if you do a lot of posts from your phone. I also use a twitter program called Twinkle, that I like to use.

I like the look of your phone, what did you use to unlock it? Did it come with that “skin”

    @Joshua » I figured you’d be a sucker for Monkey Ball.

@Adam » sorry bro, will you forgive me if I take it back?

@Brent » solid options bro - I’m sureious about the Bubblewrap and Jared……. Have you used both Twinkle and Twitterific?

@Andy » yes, ok, you get all the credit for making my daughter a nerd - good one!

@Adam H » You would need to jailbrake your phone if you are a at&t user. Once you did that, you could use a bunch of home brew applications - one of which is called winterboard. That allows me to theme my phone. I had to unlock it in order to use it with a provider other than at&t. Question - why twinkle instead of twitterific? I’m currently trying out both, but they seem so similar…

  12. brent(inWorship) | Aug 21, 2008 | Reply

CJ, I have used both Twinkle and Twitterific. I have also used Twitterfon, which is Twitterfox for the iPhone.

Here’s my take. I’ll be curious to hear yours once your done trying them all out.

Twitterfon isn’t ready yet. They released it too early. It has no color coding for direct’s or replies and the browser window crashed the app. Guaranteed crash if you click on a link within the browser window. Twitterfon said it was an Apple problem and he’s stuck until they change. that doesn’t sound too promising. Goodbye Twitterfon.

Twinkle is a very cool idea. The location thing is cool, but on my iPhone (as is a problem with many of the new GPS models) I am hardly ever found. i have to restart to get it to find me, so this feature doesn’t help me much. I like the photo option better on Twinkle, cause it allows both a pic from memory to be attached or a camera pic. that’s nice.

Twitterific is my choice for now. Cause I’ll probably jump around. Twitterific does everything Twinkle does, including location, except attaching camera photos. you have to take a pic and then attach it before Twitterific can send it. I also really like Twitpic. I like that Twitterific sends your attached pics to Twitpic and archives them there and url’s them there. Just a preference. But the big plus for me is that Twitterific has it’s own internal browser. Which means when I click on a link, it opens up in Twitterific. It does not shut the app down and open up Safari. This is huge for me, cause 1 click and I am back to the timeline and browsing tweets again.

I think both are strong, but Twitterific just seems a little cleaner and smoother in use. You used the word familiar on Twitter tonight. I think it feels more familiar, cause it is easier to navigate from choice to choice. It’s as if you’ve been using it for a long time.

    CJ,
I feel like Twinkle works better than twitterific. That’s the main reason for me. Thanks for the heads up on the software stuff. I unlocked mine and messing with different themes and such.

@brent(inWorship) » Thanks for the assessment bro. While I haven’t decided, I am leaning toward twitterific. I’m keeping both on my phone for a little while longer until I make the official decision.

@Adam - glad the unlocking/jailbreaking went well. Be sure to hit up the NES Emulator - its freaking amazing! RBI Baseball all the way!
